Who we are: consumer participation and governance

The ONTrac at Peter Mac Victorian Adolescent & Young Adult Cancer Service sits within the Division of Clinical Services at Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, reporting directly to the Executive Director of Clinical Services.

The Service reports externally to Cancer, Strategy and Development, The Victorian Department of Health and is guided by the Victorian & Tasmanian State-Wide Advisory Committee, chaired by Professor Susan Sawyer, Director, Centre for Adolescent Health, Melbourne.

ONTrac at Peter Mac is committed to the meaningful engagement of young people in service development and healthcare delivery. In 2010 in collaboration with the Victorian & Tasmanian Youth Cancer Network Project and CanTeen, the Service established The Victorian & Tasmanian Youth Cancer Advisory Board (YCAB). Run independently of but with support from the Service, YCAB operates with a vision of improving cancer services for adolescents and young adults (AYAs) and their families across Victoria and Tasmania. The Board comprises up to 12 young people from Victoria and Tasmania who have all had an experience of cancer between the ages of 15 and 25 as patients, siblings, or partners, and is supported by a broader AYA consulting group. YCAB provides consumer advice and guidance to the Victorian & Tasmanian State-Wide Advisory Committee, ONTrac at Peter Mac and partner organisations regarding a wide range of AYA service development, research and education and training initiatives.

The Victorian & Tasmanian Youth Cancer Advisory Board received a 2011 Victorian Public Healthcare Award for its development and in its delivering of local and responsive governance, and in 2013 was independently awarded a Victorian Department of Health grant to support the Board’s work in several key priority areas.
