WHAT IS APLI?

APLI is a group of Australian palliative care personnel and supporters interested in the supportive development of palliative care in the Asia-Pacific region.

One of the prime inspirations for the group comes from Dr Jan Sjernsward, former head of the WHO Cancer and Palliative Care Unit. He speaks of the urgent and overriding requirement for palliative care professionals to APPLY our knowledge in a way that benefits those most in need. This is particularly relevant in developing countries where the majority of patients have incurable disease on presentation.

The Objectives of APLI are:

To develop and foster links between palliative care providers and organisations in Australia and New Zealand and the Asia-Paciific region.

To provide a forum for the exchange of information and ideas between providers of palliative care in the region.

To raise awareness of the needs new palliative care services and further development of palliative care in the region.

In addition, the formation of close partnerships will give rise to a deeper mutual appreciation of the cultural and spiritual influences on suffering and its relief during the last phase of life.

APLI hopes to encourage branches, known as LINKS (eg LINK India) in many countries.

Important issues to be addressed include twinning or partnership arrangements between services, provision of appropriate support including educational support for developing services and drug availability.
