ALLG - About Us

The ALLG is "the Australasian Leukaemia and Lymphoma Group Ltd", the only independent not-for-profit organisation in Australia and New Zealand that researches, tests and delivers treatment programs to people suffering from Leukaemia, Lymphoma and associated haematological disorders. The ALLG conceives, organises, conducts, manages and analyses clinical trials to find new and better treatments for Leukaemia and Lymphoma to save and prolong lives. It also aims to fund appropriate research and specific programs to reduce the burden of such diseases for present and future generations and to increase the understanding of such diseases by appropriate research including clinical trials. Leukaemia and Lymphoma are the generic or common names for many different forms of blood cancers and lymphatic disorders and they are the most frequently-occurring forms of cancer found amongst children from 1 – 15 years, and amongst teens and young adults up to 24 years. They also remain amongst the most frequently-occurring forms of cancer throughout adult life. The public health cost burden of Leukaemia and Lymphoma is significant and these forms of cancer are amongst the most difficult to cure and involve the most expensive of all treatments.

The ALLG is governed by a Constitution and a Policy and Procedures Manual. The health and dynamism of the group is best reflected by the great breadth of trial activity, and large number of individuals involved in the group in the numerous essential roles; members, local investigators, study Principal Investigators (PI), specialist, disease committees, Safety and Data Monitoring Committee (SDMC), Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC) and Board of Directors.

What Sort of Research does the Group Conduct?
The ALLG carries out a number of clinical trials in cooperation with major pharmaceutical companies who provide funding for them in Australia and New Zealand and also co-operates in international trials co-ordinated from Europe and North America. The group also carries out trials that it organises independently, based on its members’ own scientific research and largely funded from its own resources. The focus is on phase I to III trials with an emphasis on phase II trials of novel drugs and innovative regimens and phase III studies aiming to improve treatment standards.

The group also conducts associated laboratory research, so that haematological malignancies can be better understood scientifically, and improved diagnosis and treatments can be developed. A major focus is translational research i.e. research which brings together laboratory studies and clinical trials.

An important research facility is the ALLG Tissue Bank housed in QLD at Princess Alexandra Hospital. By storing tissue from consenting patients, material is available for a wide range of laboratory research projects.

Who are Members of the ALLG?
The ALLG has over 300 members among haematologists, medical oncologists, pathologists and scientists located in approximately 85 institutions in all states of Australia and all large cities of New Zealand. There are also over 200 associated data managers and research nurses, who participate in the clinical trials conducted through the ALLG.

The ALLG benefits from the commitment and expertise of its members in the medical and scientific communities.
